In January of 2009, two days after retiring from my job of 37 years, I took a road trip around my home state of Florida
(mostly the West/Gulf Coast). I learned so much about Florida's history and all the interesting things Florida
has to offer. It's not all Disney World and the Space Shuttle - although, the Space Shuttle IS pretty spectacular!!

SUWANNEE RIVER (Fanning Springs)

As you drive along US 19, you come across Fanning Springs State Park. It's a beautiful park along the historic Suwannee River. It's a great place to stop for a picnic and go down and put your feet in the crystal clear water of the River.

"Way down upon the Suwannee River . . . "
ORIGINAL FANNING SPRINGS BRIDGE

The Bridge was built by the State in 1934. It was originally located 29 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico and was the southern-most Suwannee River crossing. This section of the bridge was erected by the State as a monument, and it still bears the original plaque inscribed with Stephen Foster’s memorable song, "Way down upon the Suwannee River."

And what better way to end the day than a [no frills]
picnic along the Suwannee River!?
