In January of 2009, two days after retiring from my job of 37 years, I took a road trip around my home state of Florida
(mostly the West/Gulf Coast). I learned so much about Florida's history and all the interesting things Florida
has to offer. It's not all Disney World and the Space Shuttle - although, the Space Shuttle IS pretty spectacular!!

MICANOPY, FLORIDA

Micanopy is a unique city located just south of Gainesville. The streets are lined with ancient oaks and Spanish moss. There are private homes and storefronts that time seems to have forgotten. Most of the buildings are on the National Historic Register; Micanopy is the oldest inland settlement in Florida. As early as 1539, there is record of a village located at the site of Micanopy where explorer Hernando De Soto found the Timucuan Indians living. Micanopy is a very quiet and friendly town (everybody here seems to know everybody else).

These few buildings depict the entire downtown area
(it's a very small, charming town)

This place, called Coffee N Cream, was an adorable
place to stop for lunch.  The people are friendly
and the food was excellent!

This cemetery had graves dating back to the 1800's.
